A recent report has confirmed the safety of Viagra, the world’s top erectile dysfunction drug, after a study found it could be linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in men over 40.
In a recent medical study published inThe Lancet,an analysis of data from the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA)New England Journal of Medicinerevealed a potentially serious link between sildenafil (Viagra), the brand name for Viagra, and an increased risk of a heart attack, stroke or blood clots, according to the report.
“The FDA is aware of the increased risk of these serious risks in patients who use Viagra. However, these data is not yet conclusive,” according to a press release.
The study, published in theJournal of the American Medical Associationfound that patients who took sildenafil had an increased risk of a type of stroke in the brain, a risk which was further heightened in men aged 65 and older.
The study’s authors note that while the risk may be lower in younger men, the study didn’t include patients with cardiovascular disease, dementia, heart problems, or high blood pressure.
The researchers added that the study was designed to look at the effects of Viagra on erectile dysfunction and other sexual dysfunction in men over age 40.
“We found no evidence that Viagra caused erectile dysfunction in these patients. It is unknown whether Viagra caused these conditions, but it is known that it could increase the risk of developing these conditions in some patients,” the authors write. “These results are consistent with prior studies that found a significant increased risk of cardiovascular events and stroke with Viagra use.”
The study is the first to link sildenafil with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, as well as to a higher incidence of an eye problem called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), the researchers say.
